New home or old, the most important part of design is the layout and making sure you have a good balance in weight and color of your furniture throughout the room. Some homes have large rooms but with windows and doors in unusual places, making furniture placement difficult. Keeping the path open between rooms and placing furniture properly may seem overwhelming but really is simple when you keep in mind the balance of weight, use of the room and the proper size of the furniture.
What are your favorite colors? What three work well together? If you like earth tones add an accent color, possibly blue or green. By pulling in an accent color you add interest to a color scheme. The point is to limit yourself to three colors and build from there. Having too many colors makes the space feel busy. When you decide on your accent color use it around the room rather than all in one spot. Pillows, art and accessories can carry the color fr you.
The placement of the furniture is so important, so you are actually quite comfortable using a room. Are you planning around a TV or a great view? Do you expect a large group of people in the room or just a few? How you use the room needs to be considered in the layout.

Here is a perfect example of balance in the weight of the furniture. Having a pair of chairs on each side of the sofa with the right size coffee table gives great balance. Repeating the blue in the chairs in pillows and accents pulls the color around the room. The cream tones in the rug and sofa work well with the blues and also look great with the gold glass accessories in the room. Keeping the color story simple and the placement of furniture balanced really makes the room come together.

I have always loved the look of two sofas facing each other! Here the blue sofas look great with the rug and the white chairs are the perfect accent color that is pulled from the rug also. The swivel chairs are perfect with a round accent table. Swivels or any angled chairs look best with round tables between them. Having a rectangular table with angled chairs causes the angles to fight each other. This room is perfect for a small gathering of friends and everyone can feel included in the conversation.

Another great example of balance both in the way the color goes around the room and the weight distribution of the sectional and chairs. The fuchsia chairs were chosen first and the draperies were made with the same fabric so each side of the room has this beautiful color. The sectional seats a good number of people and the placement is perfect to watch TV. The traffic pattern works out well in the room and in between the kitchen and family room. These are all important details to be aware of as you plan your room.
