Color Theory In Design

When starting to make your house into a home the first thing you need to address is your color story. The best way to do this is starting with your favorite color and building from there. A maximum of three colors seems to work the best for your main selections with additional colors used in accessories, pillows, art and rugs.
If you love blue then start with either a blue sofa or two blue chairs and pick a great color to work with it.

Our client picked two blue swivel chairs and wanted a new look in her sofa. She previously had a cream leather sofa but wanted more color this time. The caramel sofa definitely fit the bill. With the blue pillows to pull the blue from the chairs we had a perfect start. The carpet in her new home is cream so we could easily have added green, gold, or black. She decided the black round end tables would add a new dimension and the round shape is great with the straight lines of the furniture.

Here is the picture of one of the blue swivel chairs still on our showroom floor. Soon the home will be ready and we can deliver the furniture.
One of my favorite design ideas is to add a touch of black to a room. It immediately makes the other colors stand out more and keeps the look cohesive. It is amazing how black simply makes other colors pop.

Picking the right accessories makes such a difference in completing the room. Blue vases and containers on a caramel colored tray on the coffee table continues the color story perfectly. The large black framed round mirror on the wall carries the light around the room, reflects the colors and fills the wall well.
So basically, start with your favorite color and work from there. Don’t have too many colors or patterns or the room starts looking busy.
