You may not realize the extreme importance of having all your measurements correct before you start shopping for furniture, art, accessories, draperies or anything going into your home. That is one of the reasons Nelson Designs prefers going to a house and taking all the measurements before helping you find the perfect items for your home.
When you measure for art you need the width of the wall but don’t forget to see where thermostats, lights or any other items are on the wall. The wall might be four feet wide but a thermostat could be 12 inches in and that certainly changes what will fit.
If the art or mirror is going over a piece of furniture, you need the height and width of that piece. It should not be wider than what is below it and it shouldn’t be so narrow that the space on the sides are as wide as the piece you are hanging.
The biggest mistake I see is hanging an item that is too small for the space. If you have high ceilings you need a taller piece to fill the space.
Here is a perfect example of an art piece that is a good length but not tall enough for the wall. It is also too high. The space below is basically the same size as the piece hung there. It should be considerably taller with about 6 to 8 inches under it.
Here is the right size and placement of a mirror centered over a sofa. It fills the space so much better. The space on each side is equal and smaller than the mirror. Too much wall on each side means the art or mirror is simply too small.
Here is a great color story with an interesting painting picking up the colors. What could make the setting better? Either add a piece of furniture such as a console or credenza under the painting or place a much bigger painting on the wall. As it is, there is so much wall space around the picture it looks lost on the wall.
Here is an example of a wall in a client’s house. To fill in the space around the TV two mirrors were added on each side. The space above the TV was too large to be left empty so a clock was added. By adding a round clock the shapes aren’t all rectangular and it is more interesting.
